Top scariest game moments

In "Climax," even after the Hero Killer Stain had been apprehended by Izuku Midoriya, Tenya Iida, and Shoto Todoroki, he still found a way to break free and deliver one of the most sinister moments of the entire anime. His demeanor changed somewhat to a crazed and zombie-like state, muttering about only letting All Might kill him, all the while letting off an aura that caused everyone else to freeze, even the likes of Gran Torino and Endeavor.

With the terrifying backdrop of a blood-red moon and his crazed approach towards the heroes, it was all stopped by him succumbing to his injuries and losing consciousness while still standing up.

In "Encounter" at the end of the second season, Tomura Shigaraki, the League of Villains' immediate leader brazenly confronts Izuku Midoriya in the middle of a shopping mall for a nice "chat," while everyone else unwittingly goes about their days.

Initially posing as a fan, Shigaraki quickly gets his hand around Midoriya's neck so as to encourage him not to do anything reckless. Towards the end of this threatening discussion, Ochaco Uraraka stumbles across them, quickly realizing that something isn't right, prompting Shigaraki to leave. The whole situation, from the creepy music to the scary animation, really ramped up the tension and made this one of the most terrifying moments that didn't involve an all-out fight. In an anime about heroes, it is only natural that there are countless villains introduced for them to fight.

While they are often introduced and presented in evil and sinister ways, there are very few introductions as sinister and terrifying as that of Moonfish, during the Forest Training Camp arc.

Moonfish is introduced hunched over the severed hand of UA Class 1-A member Mezo Shoji , immediately displaying his bloodlust with his terrifying moaning and general demeanor. This immediately puts across his Blade-Tooth Quirk as a formidable and terrifying obstacle that the students must overcome. His massive figure hulks in the distance, slowly walking towards the player, the ground crumbling beneath until he starts charging and engulfs the entire screen in a void of blackness.

This battle was massively stress-inducing and felt hopeless and apocalyptic against the rest of the happy-go-lucky game. In a game that essentially feels like a Michael Bay blockbuster film , a creepy isolated island on the corner of the map feels a little out of place. When players fly to this island with an aircraft, the weather suddenly gets worse and your plane will burst into flames, sending it careening down onto the shore.

The whole island ends up as an homage to the uber-popular television show Lost , but players unfamiliar with the series will be instantly wary of the situation. Plane wreckage is found in the forest, a large message on the beach says "SEARCH" and points to a mysterious hatch in the ground, and an unkillable enemy follows players around the island with dark smoke pouring off its body.

Control feels very comfortable labeled as a sci-fi action-adventure with hints of eerieness and surrealism in its vast world that occurs entirely inside the Bureau building.

But, some moments, such as the side mission where main character Jesse finds a poor man unable to take his eyes off an evil refrigerator, cemented themselves as pure horror done right.

When the man suddenly vanishes as Jesse is trying to help, she communicates with the fridge through her powers and is sucked into a large, dark area where she is suddenly face-to-face with a gigantic, headlight-for-an-eye creature with spindly legs named "The Former.

Nighttime, the pouring rain, and an empty home are what sets the mood in Gone Home, a character-driven slow burn of a story where the player character Katie explores each room, uncovering secrets and piecing together her family's past.

While mostly a dramatic and sometimes heartfelt experience, the empty house at night during a storm feels extremely eerie, and players felt the terrifying sense of knowing what it's like to be home alone but feeling like someone is watching. That feeling comes to a culmination when Katie finds out her younger sister was investigating potential ghosts in the home, and she stumbles upon a hidden passage in the wall.

Inside has clippings and art on the walls, and a solitary crucifix, with words written in the wood. When discussing horror gaming, Resident Evil is without a doubt near the very top of the list. Like Silent Hill , it launched on the original PlayStation in the mids and has gone on to become royalty in the industry, introducing generations of fans to its gruesome and engaging universe. Fans of the original games know it as a pure exercise in challenging survival horror , but the series has gone through some major changes as its expanded its world from zombies to other horrifying creatures and villains.

It refocused down the line into a more linear, action-oriented series, but has masterfully kept its terrifying moments and memorable sequences close to its heart. A defining moment in the original game that terrified games worldwide, the second players turn a corner mere minutes into the game while exploring a creepy mansion is when they are met with their first zombie. This moment was made even more terrifying in the Gamecube remake of the game, with the graphical update making the scene even more horrific.

A zombie is hunched over a body that it is consuming and slowly turns its head to face the player. Pure panic sets in as the creature rises and stumbles toward the player, the combat controls unfamiliar as players struggle to shoot it. It falls to the ground Before players even step foot in the mansion, they are attacked by a pack of monstrous dogs as they investigate a crash site.

The sequence is played out in a cutscene, and inside the mansion feels safe from the creatures - aside from the aforementioned zombies. After exploring for a while, solving puzzles, and unlocking passageways, players enter a wing of the mansion that is well lit and not overly ominous.

Several windows line the wall, the moonlit night glowing through. A few steps past the first window is when the glass suddenly shatters and the undead canines burst into the hallway, a jump scare that is one of the most effective in gaming history. It seemed like everything was about to take a turn for the worst until Erwin gave them one last push. By some miracle, Erwin survived the encounter, but that doesn't make his close call with a Titan any less terrifying.

The Colossal Titan was the largest Titan in the series until this monstrosity showed up. A lot of information came to light by this point in the story, with the Scouts discovering that Krista was actually Historia Reiss, the illegitimate daughter of Rod Reiss.

Although the Titan was too large to walk, that didn't stop it from crawling like a giant worm. Most horrifyingly of all, when it finally stood up, the front of its face and chest were completely missing, ground away with friction. It was a shock when Reiner and Bertholdt not only revealed that they were Titans but that they were the Armor Titan and the Colossal Titan respectively.

Considering what happened when the Colossal Titan destroyed the wall, Eren was understandably enraged by that. The fight that broke out between them was intense. It looked like Eren was going to win until the Colossal Titan fell off the wall to attack him.

The image of a half-melted giant Titan lunging at Eren with its mouth wide open and its eyes glowing red was absolutely terrifying. What made Attack on Titan so great was how terrifying it was from the get-go. Titans were a known threat but because of the wall, they seemed like a distant problem. That was until a meter Titan materialized just outside of the walls.
