Symantec antivirus 10.2 maintenance release
Initial scan also went through without incident, though it took a heavy toll on the machine and it was impossible to perform any meaningful use while scanning the files. During day-to-day use, we were disappointed to find that the main client application doscan.
This does not inspire confidence. The system offers a wide range of alerting options including email messages, broadcast messages and SNMP traps. User programs can also be set to run when specific alerts occur, allowing an increased range of responses to meet particular needs. We really like this, as when we applied our test viruses, the wide range of reporting options the anti virus application can send up the electronic equivalent of multiple flares to signal anyone and everyone that there is a threat.
It could also be classed as a little overkill in a smaller environment, but its fully configurable and easy to manipulate. The main configuration and management options are extensive. Showing its enterprise credentials, the Symantec product offers a host of central management options from locally hosting and serving updates to centralised policy management and stats.
Web-based graphical reporting is excellent, and Symantec is the only tool to offer this. Even in a smaller environment, we think this is a very useful tool to have available, allowing IT to centrally analyse a range of data relating to updates and threats.
I've been running Symantec Corp AV ver A few weeks ago windows security alerts started saying it can't find an AV program. Symantec is stll running, updating every day, autoprotect is on, etc. Not sure if a windows update set this off or not but I couldn't find anything online about it.
Anyone know what could have happened or what I should check first? I noted this happening on my Vista computer at work a couple of weeks ago with Symantec Endpoint Protection Vista actually knew enough to say it was running, but that method it used to tell Windows that it was working was no longer used by Windows.
The exact text of the message from the Security Center is: Symantec Endpoint Protection is on but is reporting its status to Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported.
Installing Service Pack 2 should resolve this. Symantec Rob Rachwald, director of security strategy at Imperva, wrote in a blog post that the incident was "embarrassing on Symantec's part" but not likely to "keep the Symantec folks awake too late at night, and certainly not their customers. If the source code had been recent and the hackers were able to poke enough holes in it, then exploiting the software could be possible, noted Rachwald. But there's not much they can learn from old code.
