That would also be a good reason to use an indexed load command rather than just giving it the number directly.

Sure enough, when I messed around with the dipswitches, I managed to not only get freeplay working, but also start the game with those different lives. I'm working blind. As always, Google is your friend. I don't know what you did with your Game Genie stuff, but hopefully this information can set you in the right direction.
